This Tater Tot Turkey Pot Pie is a cross between the popular hamburger Tater Tot casserole and a shortcut version of traditional turkey or chicken pot pie. This crustless turkey pot pie is made with frozen vegetables, leftover turkey, and topped with crispy Tater Tots instead of a pie crust.

I love making this leftover turkey tater tot casserole after Thanksgiving or Christmas. Since we typically have extra, I also like using the leftover turkey in my Cheesy Turkey Shepherd's Pie.

If you’re looking for a quick and simple recipe to use leftover Thanksgiving turkey or rotisserie chicken, this one is a kid-friendly dinner winner! Even picky eaters will love it.

It’s a close cousin to the popular hamburger tater tot casserole.

I created this semi homemade casserole for my Holiday Cooking Show as a recipe to use leftover Air Fryer Turkey Breast and Gravy. I called it Turkey "Tot" Pie, a humorous play on words for the combination of turkey pot pie and tater tot pie.

It’s an easy recipe for turkey pot pie made without a can of cream of chicken soup... or cream of “anything” soup.

This is a gluten-free turkey pot pie and casserole if you use one of the gluten-free Alfredo sauces, plus, Ore Ida Tater Tots are gluten free. Be sure to read labels carefully when checking to see if a product is gf.

If you are watching your carbs or short on time, it's nice to have a recipe for crustless turkey pot pie.

    Shortcuts

    • One of the shortcuts is a bottle of creamy Alfredo sauce in place of a homemade white sauce.
    • Most pot pies have potatoes inside the filling and a crust on top. This casserole replaces both with crispy tater tots on top.

    Ingredients

What you will need to make this turkey leftovers casserole.

Scroll down to printable recipe for exact ingredient quantities.

    • Turkey or Chicken - Either chopped turkey or chicken works well in this recipe. You can even do shredded smoked chicken or turkey!
    • Alfredo Sauce - Your favorite brand of 15 to 16 ounce bottle or make 1 ½ to 1 ¾ cups of your own if you have a favorite recipe.
    • Onion - Chop it fresh or use chopped frozen onion. Don't like chopped onion but like the flavor? Just add ¼ teaspoon onion powder.

How to make this turkey pot pie with leftover turkey

The prep for this easy casserole is less than 10 minutes with just 5 ingredients!

Scroll down to the bottom for the printable recipe with detailed instructions.

    • Preheat oven to 375F degrees. Coat a deep dish pie plate or casserole dish with cooking spray or grease with butter.
    • Combine turkey, Alfredo sauce, mixed vegetables, onion (if using onion), and thyme in a large bowl. Spoon the turkey mixture into the pie plate and spread to the edges

    Pro Tips

After emptying the pasta sauce from the jar, add about 2 tablespoons of water to the jar. Put on the lid and shake vigorously. This easily loosens the creamy sauce from the sides of the jar.

    • Arrange the Tater Tots on top of the filling. (I give specific directions in the printable recipe below.)
    • Bake, uncovered, for 30 to 35 minutes or until the mixture is bubbly and the tater tots are golden brown.

    Substitutions & Variations

Trade "this" for "that" in this turkey pot pie casserole.

    • Mixed vegetables: A 15 ounce can (drained) mixed vegetables or leftover vegetables can be used instead of frozen.
    • Chicken and Tater Tot Casserole: A great way to use leftover rotisserie or chopped cooked chicken in a casserole.
    • Tater Tots- Size and Flavor: Onion Tater Tots add extra flavor without adding an extra ingredient. There are also mini Tater Tots. Other brands are often called tater puffs or potato puffs.
    • Sweet potato tater tots: These are available in some of the larger grocery stores and add a little sweetness if you don't mind that and love sweet potatoes!
    • If you have extra gravy: If you plan ahead while making your turkey gravy for Thanksgiving and make extra, you could use about 1 ½ cups gravy instead of the Alfredo sauce.

    Helpful information

Do I need to thaw the Tater Tots?

No! Just use frozen Tater Tots right out of the bag for this. Thawed potato puffs tend to fall apart.

Can I use chicken instead of turkey?

Absolutely! Just swap out the turkey for chicken and you can make a tater tot and chicken casserole.

Can I make individual turkey pot pies?

You can mini turkey pot pies by mixing together the ingredients in a bowl and instead of adding it to one large pie plate spoon the mixture into mini pie containers and top each with frozen tater tots.

What to serve with turkey pot pie

    • A simple salad or Broccoli Cauliflower Salad would pair well with something like this turkey pot pie casserole because it's such a filling dish on it's own so you'll want something light.
    • If you have leftover sides from Thanksgiving like my small batch Strawberry Pretzel Salad or Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts with Sorghum Molasses and Bacon.
    • No Knead Dinner Rolls or Garlic Butter Cruffins

    How to store

    • To Store: Store any leftovers in the refrigerator, covered or in an air tight container.
    • Freeze: Before baking the casserole, cover with heavy duty aluminum foil or arrange the casserole in a disposable aluminum pan. Freeze up to 9 months. You can also bake the casserole, let it cool, and freeze the same way.
