It's no secret that Oreo cookies are America's most popular store-bought cookies. But, did you know these cream-filled, chocolate cookies come in at least 17 different kinds of Oreo cookies?

Here's a taste testing breakdown of 17 Oreo cookies with pics included from Food and Wine.

If you're curious to see which one they ranked #1 go here to see. Comment at the end of my recipe which flavor is your favorite. Will it be Mint Oreo Cookies?

My daughter sent me a Pinterest pin recently of a Mardi Gras Oreo cookie ball because she was attending her first Mardi Gras ball in Mobile, AL.

So, I guess you could say she was a fan of both kinds of Mardi Gras "balls". (Sorry. Not Sorry-I couldn't resist) I loved the idea but I had just made King Cake Pancakes and was already moving on to St. Patrick's Day.

Luckily, I had everything I needed to make these Mint Oreo Cookie Truffle Balls. We almost always have a stash of classic Oreos in the cabinet (or freezer) but I actually had the Mint Oreos because they were BOGO at Publix recently.

I had leftover green sanding sugar from the King Cake Pancakes-which was actually left over from Christmas! Score! Triple use from one ingredient!

I'll be making these again for the Holidays. By then, I will have stocked up on green sanding sugar from the St. Patrick's Day clearance rack! See how that works?

You can crush them in a zip-top plastic bag with a rolling pin, but the creme filling tends to stick to the bag and it's hard to crush them fine enough.

Soften the 4 oz of cream cheese in the microwave about 20 seconds on HIGH. Add it to the fine cookie crumbs and pulse in the food processor just until you don't see any cream cheese.

Most of the recipes I saw on used few cookie to cream cheese ratio, but it was too soft to use immediately and I didn't want to have to refrigerate the mixture first.

The next step is simply to finish rolling them into balls. I do refrigerate the balls at this point. This is convenient for me to make the Mint Oreo Truffle Balls ahead to this point. Then, when I have another available 30 minutes later in the day or the next day, I cover them with candy coating.

The chilled truffle balls actually makes the candy coating harden quicker. It also prevents the chocolate mixture from blending into the white coating, giving you a grey streak.

Be sure to add the sprinkles immediately after coating each ball. The coating hardens quickly and there's no going back and adding them afterward.

A trick to use if that does happen:

Put a little bit (tablespoon) of melted coating in a small zip top bag and snip the end, drizzle it across the coated truffle ball.

    THEN, sprinkle with sprinkles. Voila!

Can I make these for Christmas or Valentines Day?

You can easily change the color of sprinkles on top of the truffles to match the occasion. Gold, green, and purple for Mardi Gras, red and green for Christmas, pastels for Easter, red/white/blue for Fourth of July, etc.
