Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 (16-ounce) container kiwi fruit (6 kiwi)
  • 1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 12 or 24 candy eyes (12 if using whole kiwi. 24 if cutting them in half for flat treats)

Instructions

  • With a paring knife, make a slight cut "just through the fuzzy peel" around the top third of each kiwi. Do not cut deeply into the fruit of the kiwi.
  • Starting at the top of the cut in the peel, insert the paring knife just deep enough to start peeling the skin. Bring the knife downward all the way around to peel the lower two-thirds of the kiwis.
Cut off the bottom of the tough stem as you go.
  • Either leave them whole at this point to make 6 kiwi that can stand up or slice them in half to make 12 kiwi that lay flat.
  • Place the chocolate chips in a storage or freezer, plastic bag and microwave them for 1 minute on HIGH. Then, squeeze the chips to completely melt them.
  • Snip off a tiny amount of one tip on the plastic bag. Squeeze a small amount of chocolate on the back sides of the candy eyes and "glue" them onto the kiwi.
Squeeze additional chocolate onto the kiwi for the mouths.
  • Press pieces of pretzel sticks in the sides of the kiwi for ears.

Notes

Pro tip: Pat dry the peeled kiwi before piping on melted chocolate. This helps the chocolate stick to the fruit.
These fruit treats are best served the day they are made. They can be stored in the refrigerator up to 8 hours. After that the candy eyes and pretzels become to soft.
